    Description

This little silk tapestry  (5.5" x 18") was collected in China before 1937. It appears to have cut from a larger sleeve panel and repurposed into a souvenir item.
Sleeve band tapestries were a very popular item acquired by tourists and created by artisans who removed them from heritage robes and fashioned them into a single panel joined mirror image, framed with added textiles, and then backed with fabric.
This tapestry is composed of only one sleeve band, possibly cut from a larger panel sleeve band. It is backed with muslin. The workmanship is very good, mostly satin stitch with the central peony executed in the "forbidden stitch". The good quality of the stitching, the high degree of wear, and the staining all suggest that this is a rather old sleeve band.
There is some fabric and embroidery loss, staining, and occasional fraying on piping. Please see photos.
